Eliminating Sink Drain Odor

Eliminating Sink Drain Odor

Have you experienced foul odor coming from your kitchen or bathroom sinks? This can happen when the sinks are overworked but not properly cleaned. It is important to know that sometimes even when you use a garbage disposal, grease and food particles can still get stuck in the drain resulting in foul smell. Although bathroom sinks may not stink as much as those found in your kitchen, they still need the same amount of care and cleaning. So how do we eliminate sink drain odors?

Yes I have a Garbage Disposal

If you have a garbage disposal installed in your kitchen sink, there are some ways that will help you maintain its cleanliness and remove foul odor.

1. Hot water with dish soap – make sure that the garbage disposal is running. Let a sink-full of soapy hot water flush through it to eliminate the foul odor. To make sure that this works properly, place a sink stopper and fill the sink with hot water and a few drops of dish soap. This has a better cleaning action than just letting the water run as you use the garbage disposal.

2. Ice cubes, lemon peels, and coarse salt – an additional step is to ensure that the blades of the garbage disposal are clean from food particles that can cause foul odor. This can be done by throwing into the garbage disposal a few pieces of ice cubes with a handful of salt. Why does this work? The ice cubes will remove any fool particle sticking to the grinder while the salt will clean out the sides by scrubbing it. Repeat this flushing, but this time add a few peels of lemon to generate that fresh smell and completely eliminate foul odors.

3. Lemon ice cubes and vinegar –how do you make this? Simply freeze lemon wedges dipped in white vinegar and you have lemon ice cubes with vinegar. Make sure to slice the lemon into quarter-sized wedges. Put them in muffin cups or similar containers and add white vinegar. Leave them in the freezer overnight to make sure they freeze properly. Remove them from the container and pop them into the garbage disposal. As the ice cubes are crushed in the disposal, it will create a cleaning action. Make sure that you run a low stream of water before you turn on the disposal unit.

No I don’t have a Garbage Disposal

The following cleaning solutions are good for those that have no garbage disposal units or when eliminating foul odor from the bathroom sink.

1. Hot water – this may seem too simple, but you can never be underestimated; especially when it comes to its cleaning power. Boil water in a pot and pour it down the sink immediately. The heat would normally drain the smell especially if it involves pasta or similar food particles. The hot water is also good for flushing down grease and oil that can cause foul odor. 2. Baking soda with vinegar – pour directly into the drain about ¼ cup of baking soda and ¼ cup of white vinegar. Allow the mixture to stay for about 10 minutes to allow the bubbles to remove loose debris and deodorize the drain. Follow it up with a kettle of boiling water down the drain. This flushes out the solution with any food particles causing the foul odor. 3. Clean the trap – the drain trap is located under the drain and has a U-shape. Because of its shape, it is possible for food particles to be trapped in the trap (no pun intended). To clean this out, place a bucket underneath it before loosening the nuts holding the pipe in place. Separate it from the drain and remove trapped debris before reinstalling it. Sometimes eliminating foul odor can be as simple as removing the stopper from the sink and washing it out. The stopper can be washed under clear running water. These simple steps will help eliminate sink odor and keep your home smelling great!
